As we were having staff prayer this morning Kent Biery prayed, thanking God for the beauty of the freshly fallen snow all over camp. He was appreciative of the way the snow was a reminder of how Jesus Christ has cleansed us of our sin. Isaiah 1:18 says, "though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow." We desperately need Jesus Christ. We need His shed blood that covers our sins and makes us clean. We need His righteousness as our own because we fall short of glorifying God.
In the previous devotional entitled "The Glory Goes To God" we were exhorted to live in such a way that God is glorified. The truth about us and our lives is that we are completely unable to live this out. The truth about us is that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). What should be our course of action seeing that we fall so short?
I was reminded this week in our readings of the only course of action. Jesus began His ministry by calling people to repentance. Repent means to turn from one's sin and follow Jesus, resting upon Him for forgiveness and salvation. I love that immediately following Jesus' call to repentance comes the example of His disciples who left everything they knew behind to follow Him. It is worth asking of ourselves as we begin this new year what we must leave behind, what we must turn away from, what we must repent of as we seek to follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Only in turning to Him will we find ourselves white as snow. Only in turning to Him will we find our lives glorifying Him. Jesus alone has done and is doing this great work of redeeming our lives.
